The City of Williston is seeking a Fire Inspector to join the Williston Fire Department.Summary: The Fire Inspector works to provide fire prevention support to the community. The incumbent in this position is responsible for assisting, advising & inspecting the business community, schools, apartment buildings and general public in matters relating to fire code compliance in new and existing buildings; providing fire prevention training and presentations to the community; and assisting with/conducting fire origin and cause investigations. Supervisor: Deputy Fire Marshal Supervision Exercised: None FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conducts inspections of residential, educational, institutional, commercial, hazardous, and industrial properties to determine and enforce compliance with fire safety laws and ordinances.Prepares written correspondence and reports related to inspections and potential fire liability.Plan, review, track and oversee that new construction projects have proper fire service safety features.Works in conjunction with other city offices to ensure adherence to fire code.Performs fire cause investigations to determine where and how a fire originated.Engages in public education and fire safety education with children, adults, and schools. Education includes, but is not limited fire extinguisher classes, evacuation plans, public speaking, mass media interviews and tours.Clean and maintain station and equipment.Regularly participates in personal, company and department training.Regularly participates in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities during duty hours.Identify and coordinate training for fire prevention personnel to maintain the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform the duties of inspecting and fire investigating.Handles complaints and provides intervention for fire safety complaints.Maintains professional relationships with the community and City personnel.Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.Perform other related duties as required or assigned. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess a valid Driver’s LicenseCPR & First Aid (within one year of hire). Must have or be able to complete the Fire Inspector I certificate (within one year of hire).Must have or be able to complete the Hazardous Material Operations & Awareness certificate (within one year of hire). Must have or be able to complete the NIMS ICS 100, 200 & 700 certifications (within one year of hire). Desired Certifications: Firefighter I & II standards certificateFire Investigator I standard certificateFire Inspector II standard certificateNR EMT, AEMT or Paramedic certificateTraining opportunities available to obtain desired certifications for incumbents who have met the minimum certificate, license, and registration requirements.Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, standard operating guidelines, building codes & building plans. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Internal Communications: Regular contacts within the department and with other departments as needed. Must be able to read and write formal communications with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. External Communications: Regular contacts with third parties, outside representatives, community groups, and mutual aid partnerships as needed. Use of Equipment and/or Computers: Regular use of technology and equipment for job-related functions will be required including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, operation of various department vehicles including fire and EMS apparatus.Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to utilize both internal and external resources to obtain information and data necessary to carry out routine assignments and special projects. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff. Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment, using a high level of professionalism and critical thinking. Physical Demands: Standing in work areas, walking between work areas, and driving to various locations will be required. There will be a regular expectation to pull, push, reach, walk, stand, sit, crawl, kneel, bend and have the use of hands and fingers, use of both eyes for sight, including ability to distinguish color and distance, hearing, extensive use of arms and legs to climb on top of, under, in and around equipment and facilities; work in proximity and use of computer screens; verbally communicating, and moving objects. The employee must be able to physically move, lift, carry and manipulate up to 100 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Essential functions require maintaining condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. Employee will work at all Williston Fire Department facilities and is expected to keep work areas clean, safe, and functional. Employee may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Overnight travel may be required, generally at a low capacity annually. Work schedule is generally Monday - Friday from 8:00AM-5:00PM or as based on organizational need. Overtime is occasionally available and expected, based on organization need. An on-call schedule is to be expected. Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance is required.Any materials, files, documents, electronic tools, or other items collected or created by an employee in connection with their employment remain the property of the City. Additionally, all material created, transmitted/sent, received, deleted, downloaded, or stored using electronic tools are and remain the property of the City.
